India Post Rate Calculator

Estimate Speed Post and Business Parcel rates.

This tool returns the postage India Post would charge to send an article from one pincode to another - for Speed Post documents up to 500 g, or Business Parcel consignments up to 35 kg - given its weight, dimensions and insured value. The figure comes from India Post's own rate engine through ULIP, not from a rate card typed into this site.

Alongside the total you get the base tariff, the value-added service charges, the CGST and SGST components, the chargeable weight the engine actually billed, and the distance and local-delivery flag it derived from the two pincodes - the same inputs a counter clerk's booking system uses.

Background

What is the India Post Rate Calculator?

The calculator prices two domestic products of the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications. Speed Post is India Post's time-bound express service, launched on 1 August 1986; an article up to 500 g and within 38 × 27 × 2 cm is a Speed Post document, the category this tool prices. Business Parcel is the contractual parcel product for bulk senders under a Book Now Pay Later (BNPL) agreement, with articles up to 35 kg. Both are priced by India Post's rate engine, reached through the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP), the DPIIT gateway launched on 17 September 2022.

Tariffs were long fixed under the Indian Post Office Act, 1898 and the Indian Post Office Rules, 1933. The Post Office Act, 2023 (No. 43 of 2023) repealed the 1898 Act from 18 June 2024, and the Post Office Regulations, 2024 made under it now carry the product definitions and tariff tables; every tariff change since has been a numbered amendment to those Regulations in the Gazette of India.

The Speed Post document tariff was revised for the first time since 2012 with effect from 1 October 2025 (Gazette notification 4375(E) dated 25 September 2025), which also merged Registered Post into Speed Post as a ₹5 Registration add-on and introduced OTP-based delivery. On 17 March 2026 India Post launched 24 Speed Post and 48 Speed Post, guaranteed next-day and two-day document services between Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. From 1 August 2026 the parcel tariffs were restructured (Post Office (Sixth Amendment) Regulations, 2026, S.O. 4241(E) dated 31 July 2026). As of 15 September 2026 the ULIP endpoints still carry the Speed Post and Business Parcel product codes, and their amounts are what this tool shows.

Under the hood

How India Post prices an article

Every domestic tariff is a grid of weight slab against distance or zone. For Speed Post documents the weight slabs since 1 October 2025 are up to 50 g, 51-250 g and 251-500 g, and the distance slabs are Local, up to 200 km, 201-500 km, 501-1000 km, 1001-2000 km and above 2000 km. Up to 50 g costs ₹19 local and ₹47 to anywhere else in India; 51-250 g runs ₹24 local rising to ₹77 above 2000 km; 251-500 g runs ₹28 local to ₹93 above 2000 km. Parcel products use zones instead of kilometres - Local, Within State, Zone/Metro and Other States - with slabs from 500 g to 5 kg and a per-kilogram addition beyond. All tariffs exclude GST, which the engine adds at 18 percent split evenly into CGST and SGST.

The weight the engine bills is not always the weight on the scale. Under Department of Posts orders 8-9/2007-D (16 February 2009 and 4 March 2009), postage is charged on the higher of gross weight and volumetric weight, where volumetric weight in kilograms is length × breadth × height in centimetres divided by 6,000, rounded up to the next kilogram (rolls use 0.785 × diameter squared × length). The check is skipped when the three sides add up to 90 cm or less with no side over 60 cm. The result is the Chargeable Weight tile.

  1. 1

    Classify the article

A Speed Post article over 500 g, larger than 38 × 27 × 2 cm or declared as merchandise is a Speed Post Parcel; Business Parcel is always a parcel.

  2. 2

    Resolve the two pincodes

The engine computes the distance in kilometres between source and destination and decides whether the pair counts as local (the same city or town).

  3. 3

    Work out chargeable weight

Volumetric weight from the dimensions is compared with the gross weight; the higher one is rounded up to the slab boundary.

  4. 4

    Read the tariff cell

Chargeable weight and distance or zone pick one cell of the product's tariff table - the Base Tariff.

  5. 5

    Add value-added services

Insurance is priced from the declared value; Proof of Delivery, Registration and OTP delivery are flat per-article fees. These make up VAS Charges.

  6. 6

    Apply GST

Eighteen percent on the sum of tariff and add-ons, shown as CGST and SGST at 9 percent each, gives the final amount.

Using this tool

How to check with India Post Rate Calculator

  1. 1

    Pick the service type

Choose Speed Post or Business Parcel at the top of the form. The weight and dimension hints under each field change with the product - Speed Post caps at 500 g and 14-150 cm per side with a 300 cm combined limit, Business Parcel at 35,000 g and 150 cm per side.

  2. 2

Enter the pincodes, weight, dimensions and insured value

Source Pincode and Destination Pincode take six digits each. Weight is in grams; Length, Width and Height in centimetres; Insured Value in rupees (enter 0 if you do not want insurance). For Speed Post, the Proof of Delivery (POD) selector adds or drops the POD charge.

  3. 3

    Calculate and read the tiles

The headline card shows the Estimated Total Tariff with product, article type and delivery type badges. Below it, Tariff & Tax Breakdown lists Base Tariff, VAS Charges, CGST, SGST and Total Tax; Shipment Specifications lists Actual Weight, Chargeable Weight, both pincodes, Distance and Local Delivery. Use PDF or Share in the toolbar to keep the quote.

Why it matters

Why price a shipment before booking

Slab edges cost real money

A 251 g document pays the 251-500 g rate, and a parcel that rounds up pays for the whole next kilogram. Seeing Chargeable Weight lets you repack before the counter rounds for you.

Add-ons are easy to overlook

Insurance on a ₹50,000 consignment, POD and Registration each add to the bill. The VAS Charges line shows exactly what the options you ticked cost.

Tariffs moved three times in a year

October 2025 for documents, March 2026 for the 24 and 48 services, August 2026 for parcels. A live quote is the only reliable number.

Invoices and reimbursements

The breakdown gives the taxable value and GST split accounts teams need, and the PDF export is a dated record of the quote.

Field by field

Reading the result

The headline card carries the total; the two cards beneath it show how the engine arrived at it and what it billed.

Estimated Total Tariff
The final amount payable - base tariff plus value-added service charges plus GST. This is the counter price; BNPL contract discounts are applied at billing, not here.
SP / BP badge
SP for Speed Post, BP for Business Parcel. The badges beside it show the article type (document or parcel) and the delivery type the engine assigned.
Base Tariff
The tariff-table cell for the chargeable weight and distance or zone, before add-ons and tax.
VAS Charges
Add-on fees listed by code: insurance from the Insured Value entered, and for Speed Post the Proof of Delivery fee when POD is Yes. A dash means none was charged.
CGST
Central GST at 9 percent of the taxable value (base tariff plus VAS charges).
SGST
State GST at 9 percent, the other half of the 18 percent rate that applies to postal services.
Total Tax
CGST plus SGST. Total Tariff minus Total Tax is the taxable value to record on an invoice.
Actual Weight
The gross weight in grams as you entered it.
Chargeable Weight
The weight billed after comparing gross and volumetric weight and rounding to the slab. Higher than Actual Weight means the box is large for its contents.
Source Pincode / Destination Pincode
The two six-digit codes the rate was priced for, echoed back so a shared link or PDF stands on its own.
Distance
The kilometre distance between the pincodes as the engine computed it - the value that selects the Speed Post distance slab.
Local Delivery
Yes when the engine treats the pair as one city or town and applies the Local column, No otherwise.

Example input

Sample Speed Post quote

Speed Post · 400001 → 110001 · 250 g · 30 × 21 × 0.5 cm · insured ₹1,000 · POD Yes

Mumbai GPO to New Delhi GPO for a 250 g document. Pincodes are six digits with no spaces; weight in grams, dimensions in centimetres with decimals allowed; insured value in whole rupees.

Use cases

Who uses it

Quoting postage to a customer

Small sellers and service firms price delivery into an invoice by pricing the actual packet - weight, box size, pincode - instead of guessing from a slab chart.

Choosing between Speed Post and a courier

Compare India Post's all-in figure, GST included, against a private courier quote for the same lane before booking.

Budgeting a bulk parcel run

Operations teams price a representative parcel to each destination pincode to size a Business Parcel budget or a BNPL contract.

Checking a counter receipt

Re-run a booked article's details to confirm the base tariff, add-on charges and tax on the receipt match what the rate engine says.

Troubleshooting

Common problems

Validation error on weight or dimensions

Speed Post accepts up to 500 g, 14-150 cm length, 9-150 cm width, 1-150 cm height and a combined 300 cm; Business Parcel accepts up to 35,000 g and 150 cm per side. Switch to Business Parcel for anything over 500 g. The engine also rejects a parcel longer than 1.5 m or whose length plus girth exceeds 3 m.

No rate available for this product and destination

The engine could not price that pair - usually a pincode it does not recognise. Confirm both pincodes with the India Post Pincode tool; if they are valid, the product may not serve that destination and a counter booking will say the same.

Chargeable Weight is much higher than Actual Weight

Volumetric weight applies: length × width × height ÷ 6,000 rounded up to the next kilogram. Reduce the box size or split the consignment; a 40 × 30 × 25 cm carton bills as 5 kg however light it is.

The quote is higher than the receipt from last year

Speed Post document rates rose on 1 October 2025 and parcel rates were restructured on 1 August 2026. The tool shows the current tariff plus 18 percent GST; the walk-in retail discount was withdrawn with the October 2025 revision.

Calculation failed

The rate engine or the ULIP gateway did not answer in time; the request is retried once automatically. Wait a minute and calculate again. If it keeps failing, India Post's own postage calculator on indiapost.gov.in and the Customer Care line 1800 266 6868 (9 am to 6 pm, Monday to Saturday) are the fallbacks.
