What is the India Post pincode directory?
The pincode directory is the Department of Posts' master list of every post office in India, keyed by the six-digit Postal Index Number (PIN) that routes mail to it. India Post - the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications, founded on 1 October 1854 - runs the largest postal network in the world: 1,64,999 post offices as of 31 March 2025, of which 1,49,385 are rural. Each office is classified as a Head Post Office (810), Sub Post Office (24,281) or Branch Post Office (1,39,908), and the directory records which pincode, division, region and circle it belongs to.
The PIN system was introduced on 15 August 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar, then Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Communications, to replace manual sorting by place name with a numeric code that a sorter could read in one glance. The legal footing changed on 18 June 2024, when the Post Office Act, 2023 (assented 24 December 2023) came into force and repealed the Indian Post Office Act, 1898. Section 5 of the Act lets the Central Government prescribe standards for addressing, address identifiers and postcodes.
Under the Post Office Rules, 2024 (G.S.R. 767(E), in force from 16 December 2024) Rule 11 makes the Director General of Postal Services responsible for managing, allocating and publishing postcodes and PIN codes. On 27 May 2025 the Department launched the Know Your PIN Code portal, which geo-fences the boundary of every pincode, and Know Your DIGIPIN, a 10-character grid code for a 4 m by 4 m square developed with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC-ISRO. DIGIPIN is an additional layer; as of September 2026 the six-digit pincode remains the routing code for all mail.
How a pincode maps to post offices
A PIN is hierarchical. The first digit is one of nine postal zones - 1 to 8 are geographic (1 Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal, J&K, Ladakh and Chandigarh; 2 Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand; 3 Rajasthan and Gujarat; 4 Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Goa; 5 Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka; 6 Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Lakshadweep; 7 West Bengal, Odisha, the North-East, Sikkim and the Andamans; 8 Bihar and Jharkhand) and 9 is the Army Postal Service. The second digit narrows to a sub-zone (in most cases one postal circle), the first three digits together identify the sorting district, and the last three digits identify the delivery post office - the office whose postmen carry the item to the door.
One pincode, one delivery jurisdiction - but several offices can share a pincode. A sub office that delivers for an area usually has a cluster of branch offices in account with it, and those mostly single-employee rural offices carry the same pincode as their parent. That is why a rural pincode can return ten or twenty offices while a city pincode returns one or two. Administratively every office sits in a division, a region and one of 23 postal circles (plus a Base Circle for the Armed Forces), each under a Chief Postmaster General.

Zone (digit 1)
Mail is first sorted to one of the eight geographic zones or to the Army Postal Service (9).

Sub-zone and sorting district (digits 2-3)
Digits 1-3 identify the sorting district, usually the district headquarters office that receives the zone's mail for onward routing.

The last three digits name the office that delivers; 01 in the last two positions is conventionally the General or Head Post Office of the district.

Office hierarchy
A Head Office supervises Sub Offices, which supervise Branch Offices in account with them. Accounts, cash and supervision flow up this chain; mail flows down it.

Each office is registered with a name, type code, delivery or non-delivery status, taluk, district, state, division, region and circle. ULIP's INDIAPOST/03 service exposes this list per pincode; this tool reads it and geocodes each office for the map.

Six digits in the Pincode field - 624616. The Max Results field (1 to 50, default 50) caps how many offices the directory returns.

The lookup asks the India Post directory for the offices under that pincode, then geocodes each one so it can be placed on the map; the pincode is mirrored into the URL so the result can be shared.

The headline shows the pincode with its city and state and the office count by type; tiles name the head office and count sub and branch offices. Why look up a pincode's post offices
Catch a wrong pincode before it costs a return
A parcel booked to the wrong pincode goes to the wrong sorting district and comes back as RTO. Checking that the pincode's offices sit in the expected village or city avoids the round trip.
Know which office can serve you
Only head and sub offices offer the full counter - Speed Post and parcel booking, savings schemes, PLI, IPPB banking. A pincode served only by branch offices means the nearest sub office is elsewhere.
Standardise addresses
Forms and KYC records ask for the post office name; using the spelling in the directory keeps the address matchable in bank, Aadhaar and courier systems.
Plan a delivery network
Operators building pincode serviceability lists need to know how many offices, and of what type, sit behind each pincode before agreeing service levels.
Reading the result
The result is a map of the geocoded offices followed by one card per office, paginated. Labels below are as they appear on the page and in the PDF.
- Pincode
- The six digits you searched, mirrored into the URL and used as the PDF headline. Anything other than six digits is rejected before the lookup runs.
- Max Results
- How many offices the directory is asked for, 1 to 50 (the upstream cap).
- Post Offices (count)
- The heading over the list, with the number of distinct offices returned after duplicates are removed.
- Office name
- The office name as registered by India Post, in the card title and the PDF's Office Name column. Names carry suffixes such as B.O., S.O. or H.O. in official usage; use this spelling on forms.
- Type
- The badge on each card: HO (Head Post Office), SO (Sub Post Office) or BO (Branch Post Office). It describes the office's place in the supervisory chain, and by extension its counter services - BOs offer only basic booking and delivery.
- Village, Taluk, City, State
- The address line under the name, joined from the directory's village, taluk, city and state fields; blank parts are skipped. The PDF splits this into Village/Taluk, City and State columns.
- View on map / Show all
- View on map zooms the map to that office and highlights its card; Show all returns to the overview of every located office. Locating… means the geocoder is still working.
- Could not locate on map
- The village-city-state query returned no match in the geocoder. The office still exists; only its pin is missing. Click View on map to retry.
- Map
- Every office the geocoder could place, one pin each, capped at 100 pins. Pins are the approximate location of the village or town, not the exact building - the directory has no coordinates.
- View all N offices
- The list shows six offices by default; the button expands it to every office returned.
- Download PDF / Share
- Download PDF builds a report headed by the pincode and office count with a five-column table; Share copies the URL, which re-runs the lookup for whoever opens it.

Who uses it
Address validation before dispatch
E-commerce and courier teams confirm a pincode on a label really belongs to the village, taluk or city written on it before booking a consignment.
Choosing the right office for a booking
Speed Post, registered post and parcel booking, savings accounts and IPPB services are offered at head and sub offices, not at every branch office - the type badge tells you which office to walk into.
Serviceability and rate cards
Logistics operators map pincodes to delivery offices to decide serviceability and build zone-based rate cards, then price the parcel with the India Post rate tool.
KYC and form filling
Bank, insurance and government forms ask for the post office name alongside the pincode; this list gives the exact spelling India Post uses.
Common problems
No post offices found for a pincode I know is real
Check for a transposed digit first. Pincodes are created, merged and retired as offices open and close, and ULIP's copy of the directory can lag; confirm on India Post's Know Your PIN Code portal or the All India Pincode Directory on data.gov.in, which is refreshed monthly.
Only one office appears but I expected the whole area
Urban pincodes usually have a single delivery office. Neighbouring localities are under their own pincodes - search each one. If Max Results was lowered, raise it back to 50.
An office says Could not locate on map
The geocoder could not match the village and city names; hyphenated or transliterated names are the usual cause. Click View on map to retry; if it still fails, find it from the address line on any map.
The pin is in the wrong place
Pins are placed from the village or town name, so two villages with the same name in one state can be confused. Treat the map as a locality guide and rely on the address line.
I need to know if the office delivers, its hours or phone number
Delivery status, timings and contact details are not in this list. India Post's post office locator carries delivery status; for timings and complaints call India Post customer care on 1800 266 6868 (agents 8:00 to 20:00, IVRS round the clock, per the India Post Contact Us page) or use the CRM portal at crm.indiapost.gov.in.
